6 Top Travel Health Tips

Summer and the holiday season is here, and while many of us get ready to unwind on that much anticipated vacation, some timely planning could help avoid potential holiday disasters. Here are 6 tips to ensure you stay well on your holiday.

1. Protect against infection

See your doctor six weeks before travelling for a general check-up and to organise any vaccinations and medications you may need, including regular scripts.

2. Organise Travel Insurance

Ensure you are covered for hospital and arrange pre-existing cover if you are pregnant or have a health condition.

3. Pack a Medical Kit

Include regular medicines, sanitary products, first aid, contraception and anything to treat common conditions such as pain relief for headaches. Also consider travel sickness tablets.

4. Keep Mosquitoes away

Mosquitoes can carry serious illnesses such as malaria and dengue fever in certain areas. Wear a repellent that contains 30% DEET (N, N-diethylmetatoluamide). Avoid being outdoors at dusk and dawn when they are feeding, and cover up with long sleeve tops, pants and socks.

5. Avoid Gastroenteritis

Travelers’ diarrhea can occur in any destination, but it is particularly common for those visiting low-income countries. Avoid poorly prepared foods and untreated water. Busy restaurants and hotels are better than street stalls, stay away from shellfish and unpasteurized dairy products and drink bottled or boiled water.

6. Minimise jet lag

Try and get some sleep on the plane, stay well hydrated and avoid alcohol. Wear loose comfortable clothing and move around on the plane when you can. On arrival spend time in the sun to help reset your body clock.
