Taking Care of Your Skin in the Winter

As winter sets in, the cold dry air can wreak havoc on our skin. The thin layer of oil that traps moisture in the skin is easily lost, causing small cracks to appear in the skin barrier. Skin can become exceptionally dry and cracked which may lead it to start itching. Although this may seem like a minor ailment, a dry and sensitive skin can evolve into more complex conditions like eczema and dermatitis. A little TLC and ensuring our skin is moisturised every day is essential during this time of year.

Take Shorter Showers

As tempting as it is to have a long warm shower or bath, it is important to remember that hot water can damage our skin. High temperature causes water to evaporate off our skin which may dry it out even further. It is advisable to take shorter showers or baths under five minutes in lukewarm water. Pat the skin dry after rather than rubbing moisture off with a towel.

Avoid Soap

Soap can strip the skin of natural oils which can dry and damage its protective layer. Using a gentle soap-free wash can help prevent this from happening. Choose one that has a similar pH level as the skin and free of irritants often common in fragrances.  You may also opt to use Aqueous or Sorbolene cream instead of soap.

Moisturise Right After Showers

To hydrate the skin, moisturise liberally for a couple of minutes after every shower. Apply a cream whilst the skin is still damp to ensure moisture is locked evenly and hydration is maximised. During winter, choose heavier creams or ointments rather than lotions to help prevent getting dry and itchy skin.

Don’t Forget Your Lips

Lips lack oil-secreting glands and when winter comes, the cold can can make us prone to dry chapped lips.Avoid licking your lips as much as possible as this further dries out the skin over time. Rather, apply a lip balm or petroleum jelly as a protectant and moisturiser throughout the day and add a thick coat at night before bed.

Use a Humidifier

When its winter, its important to increase the moisture in the air at home to help prevent the skin from drying out. A humidifier or vaporiser can help add moisture to the air and keep the skin stay moist and hydrated.
